Happy President’s Day – A Diatribe

UPDATED:  How a day changes things.

Yesterday this happened:

“James Buchanan, who was at the helm as the United States careened into civil war, was dislodged from his position as our nation’s worst president by our current president, Trump.” I guess I was wrong.

I remember when Trump was running for President.  Mostly I remember saying if he got elected he would have to really do a lot to be a worse President than James Buchanan.  Well, he’s been President for over a year and well James Buchanan is looking pretty dang good.

Under Mr. Trump and his band of misfit toys (cabinet members/staff/Lacking of Proper Security Clearances) he’s taken America back to the 1940/50’s when Racism was outwardly tolerated.  A time when women had few rights when married (especially in the south).  When people were murdered (lynched) and it was deemed socially okay.  Churches/Synagogues burning (African-American/Jewish) were sanctioned and white men in power thought themselves untouchable.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence would have us all believe those were the good old’ days.  This is how I see America right now.  Our President reaps personal financial windfalls from his position.  Trump harped on his predecessor playing Golf and he would have not time as President to do the same.  Yet, he’s played more golf than any previous President in the same time period or over a tenure in office.  Not only that, he plays golf at his own establishments that cost the American Tax Payers approximately $100 million for 1 year of golf.

Mr. Pence wraps himself in his form of Christianity.  Evangelicals have given Mr. Trump a sanctioned pass.  Even though he is a known philanderer, liar, cheat and scoundrel he invokes Jesus and God with his “God Bless America” and they give him a pass.  I’m fairly certain no matter what form of Christianity you follow…that’s not a real thing.  Mr. Pence hates women in power.  He has told everyone how he can’t be in the presence of women when his wife isn’t around.  He’s afraid of being tempted I guess.  This is revealing in his lack of faith in Jesus that he will make the right choices.  It also shows his lack of self-control in all other matters in his life.  Is this really a person who should be Vice-President or even President?

The Republican Party is ridiculous any more.  The days of the calls for fiscal responsibility are gone.  They have been replaced with the days of Class Warfare.  The age where poor people are poor because they want to be and not because the deck is stacked against them.  The days where the wealthy are rewarded for their lack of paying any tax let alone their fair share.  We are back to the days of medical bankruptcy because Trump’s grand plan of destroying anything Obamaish is all that matters to him.  Instead of fixing and improving Obamacare we now live in the world of Trumpcare where only the wealthy can afford medical treatment.  Where pharmaceutical companies hold our health hostage because we can’t afford the medicines we need to be healthy.  Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell would rather all of the poor folks just die off so it makes America Greater for people like them.

The Republican Party of today would also have you believe that all of the millions and millions of dollars taken from Gun Lobbies like the NRA isn’t blood money.  Thoughts and Prayers for all of the people killed by AR-15 Assault Rifles and other various guns.  It’s not the guns…it’s the people.  No…it’s the people who should never have military grade assault weapons.  That’s not even a Second Amendment issue.  It’s a common sense issue.  Ordinary citizens will never need an AR-15.  It’s a death weapon and nothing more.

Our Country is in the throes of being not relevant on the world’s stage.  Our President watches more TV than I do and tweets as though he is a Junior High Schooler.  He tries to bully everyone who disagrees with him.  He has no respect for anyone about anything that does not mirror his own opinion.  That opinion tends to be how great he is and if you don’t say he’s great then you suck.

Will Trump go down as the worst President in the history of the United States of America?  That is still to be determined.  It still would take a lot to be worse than James Buchanan who seemed to be okay with Civil War.  There are so many variables and so much time left in Trump’s first (or only) term as President.  Until then we deal with the fact that Trump plays a lot of golf, doesn’t start his work day until 11 am and works only until about 4 PM.  He watches endless Fox News which he deems as the only not “fake news” affiliate.  The world is a scarier place under Mr. Trump and his Republican band of misfits.

Happy President’s Day…I guess.

That Time When President Trump Made The Boy Scout Jamboree Look Like a Hitler Youth Rally

Over decades Presidents have gone to the Boy Scout Jamborees to promote strength, dedication and service.  They’ve given uplifting and inspirational speeches to the attendees.  This year our paranoid and odd President, Mr. Trump turned this event into a Hitler Youth Rally.  Talking about politics and LOYALTY.   He spoke about Healthcare and Fake News.  He even threatened to fire Secretary Tom Price if Trumpcare doesn’t pass.  He also followed some of these destructive comments with “believe me”.

Nothing he had to say was relevant to the 40,000 Boy Scouts and Leaders who came to be inspired.  I really believe that Mr. Trump thinks he’s smart.  I think that he believes the law of the land doesn’t apply to him or his family.  I believe that he hasn’t a moral compass and that this speech was wholly inappropriate.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only American appalled.  The Boy Scouts issued a statement that the President is their honorary President of the Boy Scouts and that they are not Political.

The only thing missing from his grandiose speech about how great and tremendous HE is was a story about him banging some beauty queen.

I hope the boys of America look at this moment and think…that’s not what we stand for…not even close.

It’s going to be are really long 4 years 😦

Healthcare In America

My Senator responded to my email to him.  It doesn’t happen often.  Senator Pat Toomey is in the forefront of this debacle in our country concerning healthcare.  Although we agree that ACA or as it is commonly referred to as Obamacare isn’t perfect it was needed.  The Republican leadership spent the last 2-1/2 years trying to dismantle ACA because they didn’t like it.  They couldn’t exactly say at the time why they didn’t like it but they were sure if President Obama and the democrats were involved it was bad for Americans.  It turned out not to be as bad as they made it out to be.

I’ve never agreed with the aspect of ACA that everyone was forced to buy insurance.  But let’s take a look back at how this all stood.  Supreme Court Justice John Roberts (Conservative) saved ACA many times.  Proving he is more pro-business conservative than people conservative.  The mandate that is backed by a financial penalization is what makes ACA not “socialized medicine”.  It’s a business, insurance.  Everyone gets paid.

The exchanges are going bankrupt in some states.  Let’s take a look at that.  Those states where ACA is bankrupting the system are states that refused to partake in the government subsidies to help offset costs to the state and the exchanges.  Thus their failures.

So the Republicans jumped on the band wagon that people were forced to spend their money on health insurance against their will.  Then Donald Trump became President.  We then discovered in the 2-1/2 years that Mr. Ryan and Mr. McConnell were whining about ACA that was all they were doing.  There was no discussion on what or how they would handle the dismantling of ACA.  Then Trump gave them a chant “Repeal and Replace”.  Oddly enough those who voted for Trump actually didn’t know what it meant “Repeal and Replace”.  They also (my opinion only) believed that the replacement wouldn’t cost a dime and their Medicaid would remain intact.

Here we are now in 2017 with a Republican plan to mostly Repeal and not so much Replace ACA.  AHCA or colloquially known as Trumpcare is more of the same problems but with a tax cut for the wealthy 2%, who by the way, can afford to pay for their own healthcare.

Obamacare was destined to have issues based solely on the fact it relied heavily on healthy young people to buy the insurance (this is why the mandate was forced).  If they didn’t buy insurance they couldn’t fund the other side of Healhcare in America.  Our aging (hi baby boomers) population and the fact Americans are becoming sicker and the cost of treatments is larger than ever.  The young and healthy Americans said “I’ll just pay the fine…it’s cheaper” and didn’t want to pay for the mandated insurance premiums.  They are young and healthy and do not need medical care…right now.  Thus flipping their noses at the idea of “Forced Healthcare Premiums”.  This created a giant void in the dollars needed to sustain ACA.

Here is the biggest problem with the AHCA/Trumpcare.  It hasn’t the support needed from Healthcare professionals, insurance companies, etc.  A handful of Republicans who want to force it through under the cloak of secrecy are all for it though.  Because we all know what we don’t know won’t hurt us…unless we do find out and then the poo hits the fan.  Senator Toomey explained in his letter to me that this was all done for the good of the legislation and once it was revealed and sent to Congress that Amendments could be made, etc.  We’ll see, sir.

The whole reason for Healthcare legislation was because it was becoming so expensive that a person would face potential bankruptcy or death.  Those were the choices.  Nice choices, right?  Hospitals were going bankrupt because they have to treat anyone who comes to the ER…even if it’s for a cold.  Some Senators supporting decommissioning Obamacare stiffly exclaimed that if people need medical care they should just go to the ER.  Clearly these men missed that you can’t receive chemotherapy or radiation from the ER.

Oh, then there is our President, Mr. Trump who decried that “who knew healthcare was so complicated”.  I did sir, and I’m not a person of consequence.

The Republicans/Lobbyists came up with great ideas like, removing protection of pre-existing conditions.  Well not exactly, that would only come into play if you’ve been uninsured for more than 60 days.  If you don’t lose your insurance it’s all good.  Um…okay but what if the company I work for decides not to offer insurance anymore?

Here’s the short of it.  This isn’t socialized medicine.  There can be no comparisons between British and Canadian healthcare because they received coverage regardless of paying for it.  That my friends is socialized medicine.  What we are being offered is a Legislated Business Model.

My disdain is this…we have spent $4-$6 TRILLION dollars on wars we didn’t win and aren’t winning.  They’ve done nothing but destabilize the once and always exploding Middle East region of the world.  But we could find these Trillions of Dollars because it supposedly kept America Safe (not really).  Almost sixteen years later we are still paying for these wars.  The President and the Republicans want to beef up Defense spending.  Again in the pretext it will keep America Safer (it won’t).  They can find the funds for this as well.  They can find the funds to support Tax Breaks for major Corporations in America.  The reasoning is they will take their jobs elsewhere if they don’t get them (also not true).  Companies have historically purged their people for automation.  They still get the tax breaks that hundreds of millions of American’s don’t get.

I’m not saying this is solely a Republican issue.  They just happen to be in charge at the moment.  What I’m saying is America is not longer great again.  President Trump’s slogans were just that slogans.  America puts the welfare of Corporations before it’s people.  Playing to the darkest regions of the People’s fears.  The Wealthy get wealthier.  The poor give up hope and everyone suffers.

It’s not just Affordable Healthcare we need in our country right now.  It’s affordable everything.  But since Healthcare is the forefront issue its my hope that Congress will stop acting like children who don’t want girls in the clubhouse and who want to take us back to the days of McCarthyism and degradation.

It’s time for Congress to remember that they maybe be part of the 2% but the actually have a job.  We are their collective bosses and they work for everyone not just themselves and those like them.
