Monday, February 20, 2017 we will celebrate President’s Day in America. This year I actually thought about what that meant to me and our nation. Right now in the USA we are polarized by political ideology.
This will be a diatribe. You’ve been warned.
Right now in America we are led by fear. A man with no political experience got his base (white people) out in numbers to win the Electoral College Vote. He lost the popular vote by over 2 million votes. The largest loss of popular vote by a President. He ran as the Anti-Establishment. Americans were/are tired of Congress and Washington in general not working (97 days last year), not doing the people’s business but rather paying lip serve to the masses while doing the work of the Lobbyists who spend large amounts of money for those Congressional Votes.
Our President, Mr. Trump comes off as the inexperienced person we all knew he was/is…this much either side would agree on. Instead of being strong, he rants on Twitter like a self obsessed teenager who is forced to do their homework.
Mr. President, the issue isn’t who leaked the uncomfortable information about Mike Flynn and Russia but what was said by Mike Flynn to Russian Emissaries. The Administration doesn’t think that last part to be important to the American People. How do you expect the people of America are safe when underhanded deals are made?
I feel like nothing has changed with the Election of Donald J. Trump as President. His supporters have said…”Give him a chance” or “It’s only been three weeks”. Why? Every other President has faced obstacles in their first few weeks on the job. The difference, for me, is that they chose people they thought would enhance their personal vision of their office. Mr. Trump put Billionaires and Millionaire “friends” in positions of power with little or no experience with how Washington politics works. I wish them luck.
Mr. Trump wants less regulation of Wall Street. Small reminder, it was these folks who gave us subprime, banks too big to fail, the 2008 Great Recession and basically caused the shrinking of the Middle Class. We got to foot the bill for their careless GREED (TARP) and lost our retirement savings. They all got big bonus’ and zero interest loans.
Mr. Trump wants to repeal major aspects of the EPA. This organization is in charge of regulating our water and air. I suggest that perhaps the President and his friends in Washington be served water from Flint, Michigan. This might give them a firsthand account as to the need for the EPA and perhaps more not less EPA agents. I’m old enough to remember the Super Fund Clean up projects and the lawsuits from towns and cities who had clusters of deaths due to illegal dumping of chemicals by Corporations. Pollution kills…in case you didn’t know Mr. President.
One of my favorite Presidents is James Madison. He, like President Washington, had great concerns about the corrupting nature of the power the President holds. His words are ageless.
“If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.”, James Madison
“The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.”, James Madison
“In Republics, the great danger is, that the majority may not sufficiently respect the rights of the minority.”, James Madison
“The advancement and diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty.”, James Madison
Let us not forget that last one when the only news the President is comfortable with us hearing comes from Breitbart or Fox News.
Mr. Trump is President, I can only hope he starts to act more Presidential…you know for the good of America.
Happy President’s Day!
