Memorial Day – Remember Always

War is awful.  It is important to remember those who fought and died for our rights.  That’s why we vote!  Many Men and Women died to protect the foundation of our Freedoms.

Our Town hosts the Memorial Day Parade and Dedication.

I remember all of my family who fought and came home.  I remember Staff Sgt. Larry Pierce who fought in Vietnam and didn’t survive.  I remember Maj. Michael O’Donnell who fought in Vietnam in 1970 and who didn’t survive.  Major O’Donnell did eventually come home in 2001 when his remains were repatriated to the United States.  Major O’Donnell left behind these words…

If you are able,
save them a place
inside of you
and save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for the places they can
no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them,
though you may
or may not have always.
Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own.
And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one moment to embrace
those gentle heroes
you left behind.

Major Michael Davis O’Donnell
1 January 1970
Dak To, Vietnam

REMEMBER them always in your heart!
